Regulation
Cariocão 2024 will follow the same competition formula as the last three editions. In other words, in the first phase, called the Guanabara Cup, 12 clubs compete on points. At the end of the 11 groups, the leader is declared champion of this first fraction and enters the semi-finals of the Campeonato Carioca with the other three subsequent teams.
In the semi-final, the first place will face the fourth, while the second will face the third, both in the home and away matches. The winners meet in the finals to decide the state champion. In the event of a draw in the semi-finals, the clubs with the best championship will advance to the decision, even in the home and away matches. In the end, however, he doesn’t take advantage. This way, in the event of a tie, the champion will be decided on penalties.
At the end of the Guanabara Cup, the teams from fifth to eighth place will compete in the Rio Cup, a symbolic tournament. The match will be similar to that of the semi-finals and final of the Campeonato Carioca. In the first phase the last placed team will be relegated.
At your place
The tournament will start this Wednesday (17th) and will not end until April. The Guanabara Cup will be played until March 3.
The state and Taça Rio semifinals will take place on March 10 and 17 (base date). The finals, however, will take place on March 31st and April 7th.
Very motivated; little hopes
Botafogo, Flamengo, Fluminense and Vasco arrive at the tournament as the big favourites, after all they are the clubs with the largest investments. And for the first time in a long time, the difference between the four isn’t that big. Alvinegro, Rubro-Negro and Tricolor, for example, will compete in the Libertadores this season, which shows the strength of Rio football. Cruz-Maltino, despite fighting against relegation in the Brasileirão 2023, has strengthened and aims to be strong in the fight.
On the other hand there is also the group that wants to surprise. Volta Redonda, for example, plays in Serie C and last year reached the semi-finals. Audax, Nova Iguaçu and Portuguesa are clubs that will play in Série D. Lusa, in fact, has hit the post to guarantee access to the third division. Boavista, used to having medallions, is counting on the investment of a Portuguese group and also dreams of a good championship.
Where to look
The 2024 Carioca Championship will be broadcast on the Band (open TV), Bandsports (closed TV) and Canal Goat (Youtube) channels. The matches on the Vasco pitch, however, will be broadcast on SBT (open TV), SporTV (closed TV), Premiere (pay-per-view) and CazéTV (Youtube). Cruz-Maltino decided not to sign with the company selling the broadcast rights and concluded deals on her own, based on law 14.205/21, known as the “Main Law”.
