President Lula approved law 14.814/2024, which requires the screening of national films in cinemas throughout the country until 2033. The new law was published last Tuesday in the Official Journal of the Union (16).
Known as the Screen Quota Law, it was in effect for 20 years, but stopped being enforced in 2021. Since then, the issue has been debated in both legislative houses, until it was passed in the Senate in December last year .
According to the text, the rooms must exhibit Brazilian works, guaranteeing the diversity of titles and respecting a minimum number of sessions. The quantity will however be defined by the Executive.
The regulation must include measures aimed at guaranteeing variety, balanced competition and effective permanence of national films in programming. The goal is to promote our film industry.
In case of non-compliance, the company can receive a fine equal to 5% of the establishment’s average daily gross turnover. Supervision will be entrusted to the National Cinema Agency (Ancine).
Because it was passed without vetoes by the president, the law will not need to return to the Legislature and is already in effect as of the date of publication.
The information comes from Senate Agency.
