The parade culminates with the coronation of the “Emperor” at Inter
By Nadedja Calado – Returning to the elite of the São Paulo Carnival after 12 years in the “second division”, the Camisa Verde e Branco samba school, one of the most traditional in the capital of São Paulo, is preparing to kick off the plot in honor of former player Adriano, from his childhood in a Rio favela to his coronation in Italy as “Emperor” in 2004, playing for Inter.
Titled “Adenla – The Emperor in the King’s Lands”, the plot is based on a promise: when he finally rises to the Special Group, the school will pay homage to the orixá Oxóssi, spiritual patron of the group and who represents the king of hunter and lord of forests in Afro-Brazilian religions.
“Oxóssi has left engraved in the darkness a genetic memory of struggle, which pushes the boys and girls of the favelas, the men and women of colour, to seek social ascent, to change the game of life. Adriano is one example, a poor boy who gains a gigantic protagonism and who, in the continent that enslaved blacks, is crowned emperor”, the carnivalesque Renan Ribeiro explained to ANSA.
To tell this story, Camisa (with a masculine element due to the foundation’s heritage as a carnival cordon, an event type older than samba schools) will start from the origins of this noble lineage.
“Let’s destroy this idea of a subjugated Africa, let’s escape the aesthetics of the savannah, let’s demystify this caricatural continent of the collective unconscious of giraffes, wildebeests and rhinos. There are no giraffes, there are no zebras. The parade opens with an Africa traditional, with quilombola and geometric aesthetics, a true Africa in the sense of royalty, as opposed to the tribal one”, explained Ribeiro.
The parade, which will pass through Oxóssi as a political figure and great African empires such as Egypt and Mali, will culminate in how this history impacts today’s society, with the Black Power movement, the musical influence of black people and the camps of Várzea full of kids who dream of having the world at their feet through football, just like “Didico”.
In the course of his research, the carnival artist claims to have found several parallels between the charismatic former Brazilian player and Públio Élio Adriano, Roman emperor between 117 and 138 AD
“Like Didico, who left our country, Hadrian was neither Roman nor of royal lineage, he had origins in the Iberian peninsula.
They both changed their trajectories when they lost their father [no caso do atleta, o episódio desencadeou um quadro de depressão e alcoolismo que levou à derrocada de sua carreira] and a rise that seemed unlikely for its surroundings,” he stressed.
Additionally, the Green and White Camisa is traditional to Barra Funda, a neighborhood in the West Zone of São Paulo with a strong Italian immigrant influence.
It is no coincidence that the Colosseum of Rome will be represented in the last allegory: “The plot is dense and historical, but becomes more playful, relaxed, ending with a carnival atmosphere, of a samba school. We see a Tupiniquim Rome, mixed with Brazil “. , Adriano and Vila Cruzeiro [favela de origem do ex-atleta no Rio]”.
The presentation thus connects to the charisma of Adriano, idol of Flamengo and Inter, with experiences at Fiorentina, Parma, Roma, San Paolo, Corinthians, Atletico-PR and Miami United.
The irreverence of “Didico” also appears in the samba-plot, recalling when, in 2010, after scoring a goal for Flamengo against Vasco in the Campeonato Carioca, he took off his uniform and showed a t-shirt with the writing “May God forgive these bad people.”
In the samba the episode becomes the main refrain: “Axé! A Verde e Branco has returned/Axé! Okê arô!/Finally the promise comes true/May God forgive those who are not Camisa”.
The lyrics will also pay homage to the life story of the awardee: “A ball player, in the game of life/Simplicity in the form of the law/Here is the Emperor who will be crowned in the lands of the king/Here comes Didicus to be crowned in the lands of the king.”
To defend its stay in the Special Group, Camisa Verde e Branco will be the first school to parade at the Sambodromo of Anhembi, on February 9, at 11.15pm (Brasilia time). .
