Rubro-Negro is leading the Carioca Championship
Flamengo coach, Tite praised his team after Audax’s defeat by Rubro-Negro. In the press conference, the commander highlighted the construction of the triumph in the debut of the Carioca Championship.
– More than the victory, the way it was constructed was consistent. The team had competitiveness associated with technical quality. The constructions, the exchanges of passes to reach the third close to the opponent’s area to reach the conclusion. The number of creative situations was significant.
The coach said that Campeonato Carioca is the strongest among all state championships in Brazil and that he dreams of winning the title. Tite believes a trophy could help give the team confidence after a 2023 full of failures.
– The current Carioca Championship for me is the strongest in Brazil. First it was Sao Paulo. It’s very difficult. Our search is by title. This process of evolution aims at this goal. Maybe it’s little for the history of Flamengo, but it’s big for a technical committee that is arriving and which is a source of trust for a work path.
This Thursday (18th), Flamengo heads to the United States, where they will face Philadelphia Union and Orlando City as part of the pre-season. The main team returns at the end of the month to face Sampaio CorrĂȘa, in the Campeonato Carioca.

PEDRO AND GABIGOL
– As we did today, he (Gabigol) behind Pedro and pressing side by side to cut off the opponent’s passing line, yes. You can’t use Gabriel on your side or Pedro on your side. And the midfield tripod model to have Arrascaeta with two attackers, we don’t have players with these characteristics. The team was made up of two wingers or an extra midfielder who played wide. First there was Gerson, sometimes it was Everton Ribeiro, now there is Nico (De La Cruz). What will it be like, in what form will it be? This will eventually happen.
DE LA CRUZ
– All athletes are of (high) level. We try to put two athletes in each position who want to compete. The team evolves with this. They collaborate with each other, but compete to increase the technical level. De La Cruz has this characteristic, he is a player with versatile qualities, he has coached in two different roles. Lots of technical quality. He has a connection with Arrascaeta. You have the option of playing with four articulate players or two fast wingers. The team benefits from it.
RIGHT SIDE
– Last year we had a big problem. Matheuzinho and Wesley are players with slightly different characteristics, but they are three great athletes. Maybe Matheuzinho is their midfielder between marking and construction. Wesley is more aggressive, but he is also evolving in the defensive process. And Varela is more consistent in marking, coming from behind in what is our model. They ran away, but one of them should have left. You can’t have athletes at three levels and think they’ll be happy. Varela is continuing and producing well.
