The Libertadores champion terminates his contract with Fluminense

The midfielder scored a beautiful free kick during his time at the Rio club

Fluminense announced on Thursday (18) the termination of Leo Fernández’s loan contract. The midfielder arrived at the Tricolor in mid-2023 and participated in the team’s season which ended with the Libertadores title.

The Uruguayan midfielder was signed on loan from Toluca, Mexico, in July 2023. As the contract was terminated earlier than expected – it would have lasted until July 2024 – Fluminense will receive financial compensation in the deal.

Team das Laranjeiras still had the option to buy Leo Fernández, to sign the player for four years. The value was 8 million dollars, approximately R$39.36 million. Leo Fernández was even announced by Uruguayan Penãrol on Wednesday (17).

Despite his short stay in Rio de Janeiro, Leo Fernández wrote the history of the Tricolore by participating in the champion team of the Copa Libertadores, the first time for the club. However, he did not participate in the club’s campaign in the Club World Cup: the player was cut and did not even travel with the group. The midfielder has played just 20 games for the club, with one goal and one assist.
