Minions: The Rise of Gru has had its share of delays over the years, with its original release date in the summer of 2020. But the first weekend of July will release the animated film from Illumination and Universal. like him Minions: The Rise of Gru trailer teases, the film will take audiences back to Gru’s childhood (in the 1970s) when he first met the Minions. It serves as a prequel to my favorite villain movie in different ways.

On the critical front, the response to the film so far has been mixed. To get rid of the most negative review first, we’ll move on to The Guardian This is Peter Bradshaw. The reviewer gave the film two out of five stars and called Gru’s origin story “weak.” Also, in his words:

There is a laugh or two, largely due to the character names, and a witty and unexpected reference to the “Don’t mind bro” meme. But MacGuffin’s storyline is superficial and, frankly, it’s a franchise that now operates with the slightest hint of smoke.

Bradshaw called Gru’s character “slightly funny”, but overall he hopes the franchise will be “rested” after its fifth installment. Sorry to tell you, but there is already another one my favorite villain film slated for 2024. Now let’s move on to the more positive side of the review for Crane Rise. slashfilm Rafael Motamayor of, for example, called the new entry “pretty funny”, saying this:

The film is at its best when it relies heavily on its 1970s genre cinematic inspirations, most notably the Blaxploitation and Bruce Lee films. Each character is at the same time a very silly and hilarious and larger than life cartoon, such as the aforementioned nun with nunchucks, or Michelle Yeoh who plays an acupuncturist who is also a kung fu master.

As Motamayor points out, the new you serve The film is particularly entertaining when it comes to its 1970s-era use, where a team of villains called Vicious 6 enter the picture. The telegraph Robbie Collin was also somewhat flattering Crane Rise in his review, with these words:

This latest installment, set in the 1970s … is an unexpected surprise and by far the most punchy and refined entry in the series to date. That’s not to say the film doesn’t look like a binge: in fact, it fuels chaos among its audience and vomits at a dizzying speed that produces foie gras.

Variety found by Peter Debruge Crane Rise to be predictable, but he found his humor good enough to be funny. In Debruge’s mixed review, he said this:

Six months into 2022, it’s the funnest movie Hollywood has produced so far. The public knows what to expect and Illumination delivers, delivering another dose of negative behavior and well-being.

Empire Olly Richards’ Olly Richards concludes our roundup of reviews with another mediocre review, calling the film “funny” but also aware of the shortcomings that could prevent the film from reaching absolute greatness. In his words:

It’s just fun. It’s unlikely to win over someone who hasn’t been moved by the previous movies, and it’s likely to deliver exactly what you’re hoping for if you’ve enjoyed everything so far.
