Tattoo Week begins today in Rio de Janeiro

Part of the official calendar of events of the city of Rio de Janeiro, according to Law 7.748 of 12/26/2022, the Tattoo Week returns to Rio in its 11th edition, at Expo Mag (Cidade Nova)

Tattoo Week takes place on the 19th, 20th and 21st (Friday, Saturday and Sunday), from 12pm to 10pm, with free entry on Fridays, with the donation of 2 kilos of non-perishable food, which will be made available to the Comunidade. Santa Marta, Social Assistance Secretariat and supports the victims of the Baixada Fluminense, with the collaboration of Gustavo Tattoo, who will take care of its distribution.

The event, supported by Riotur, occupies 16 thousand square meters of the Expo Mag conference centre, will have 280 stands and the participation of 3 thousand tattoo artists and piercers from all over the world and is part of the official calendar of events of the city of Rio de Janeiro, with the law 7.748 of 12/26/2022.

Furthermore, there are numerous social actions planned during the event, such as the donation of micropigmentation of eyebrows and areolas for cancer patients and trans men and the donation of safety tattoos for chronic patients.

This year Tattoo Week launched a free tattoo and piercing course for young people from the favelas, aiming at professionalization and social inclusion. More than 300 interested parties signed up.

“This is the world’s largest event in the field of skin art. It includes art, business and market, exchange between artists from all over the world, presents the latest trends and segment-targeted product launches,” emphasizes Esther Gawendo, executive director of Rio Tattoo Week.

Tattoo competition in 29 categories

The traditional highlight of Tattoo Week is the tattoo competition in 29 styles, open to Brazilian and foreign tattoo artists. The best piercings are also in competition. The initiative revealed great artistic talents and the jury is made up of the most renowned professionals on the market.

“When a tattoo artist wins an award at Tattoo Week, the price of his tattoos automatically increases, he acquires visibility and concept and his career takes off”, reveals Enio Conte, president and creator of Tattoo Week. This was the case of Luiz Lopes, a tattoo artist who won Tattoo Week and received an invitation from a New York businessman to work at the event itself.

He moved with his family to the United States and now has his own studio in the United States. It also revealed talents such as tattoo artist Rapha Lopes (@raphafons), a five-time Tattoo Week champion, whose clients come from Japan, Europe and the United States to be inked with his unique and talented art. Or the example of the tattoo artist Gustavo Gomes (@gustavotattoo), champion of the Realism-style Tattoo Week, who for years has been collecting famous clients including football and entertainment celebrities.

Women have also occupied this male universe, like the tattoo artist Thaysa Lucena, with the Pointillism style, the most awarded woman at Tattoo Week.

Beauty and emancipation

The Miss and Mister Tattoo Week competition takes place on Saturday at 5pm, which chooses the most beautiful and powerful tattooed woman and man in Brazil. The objective is also to break any prejudices that still exist against the tattooed person. “The idea is to enhance not only beauty, but also engagement with the art of tattooing, empowerment and love for art,” emphasizes executive director Esther Gawendo.

Connection with Rio culture through samba, rap and rock

Tattoo Week brings a lot of music to the event with several DJs and a samba group performing Sound of puppies, at the opening of the event (Friday 19th, 12pm). Led by sambasta Camarão Netto, director of Portela’s composers’ wing, the group will perform samba roots and samba-enredo to pay homage to Rio’s samba schools. “Our sound is authentically Carioca. We are creations of Portela,” explains Camarão Netto. At the opening of the event, diplomas will be awarded to participants in the tattoo and piercing courses.

Rio’s rap is also part of the Tattoo Week music festival, which brings rapper Sain to the stage, on Saturday (20th) from 8pm. The boy Stephan Peixoto, who “grew and evolved with his father” – as he sang in 2003 in Loadeando -, became the rapper Sain, one of the most influential artists in Rio de Janeiro. Son of Marcelo D2, the artist has already given a boost to the careers of his friends and tells in rhyme the stories he experienced on the streets of Catete, a neighborhood south of the capital Rio de Janeiro.

And on Sunday at 8pm, the homage to rock with the presence of Banda Glória. Before that, at 5pm, a cosplay competition will entertain the audience.
