Paulistana won a duel that lasted almost three hours
Luisa Stefani, number 20 in the world, qualified this Friday (19th) for the round of 16 of the women’s doubles of the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam of the season, played in Melbourne.
The native of Sao Paulo and the Dutch Demi Schuurs defeated the North American couple Peyton Stearns and Caroline Dolehide by 2 sets to 1, with scores of 7/6 (9-7), 4/6 and 7/5, in 2h47m.
– Great victory as a couple, very hard-fought, the whole match was close, intense from start to finish. We had many chances in the first and also in the second set, even in the third, where we took the lead 4-1, but the girls served very well, they held the ball very firmly, credit to them for always tightening up the game. The way we resisted the pressure was excellent, moments that could have gone differently and we managed to keep the momentum going well, winning the first set, which was important, and also the beginning of the third. In the end, the details mattered – said the athlete.
Seeking a place in the quarterfinals, Luisa and Demi face the sixth seed, the North American Desirae Krawczyk and the Japanese Ena Shibahara, in a duel with no date yet set.
In the mixed doubles Luisa and Rafael Matos, reigning champions, were eliminated by the British pair of Joe Salisbury and Heather Watson: 6/3 and 6/4. The Europeans replaced the North American partnership of Rajeev Ram and Peyton Stearns.
– In the mixed race with Rafa it didn’t work. The rivals changed at the last minute. Joe is a great doubles player, Heather is experienced, she played excellent. The match was very much decided on important points and they won with a majority. It was a break in every set, super detailed. A shame – explained Luisa.
