The three-time champion reiterates that he doesn’t care about records and numbers, but he sees himself beating his rival’s finish line
three-time champion of Formula 1, Max Verstappen believes he has the conditions to become hepta as Lewis Hamilton AND Michael Schumacher. Although he does not place the search for numbers and records as a priority, the Dutchman from Red Bull, now 26 years old, imagines some possibilities for the future and sees himself collecting another five titles if he counts on the contribution of some factors, especially in relation to the quality of the ‘car.
“If it happens, it will happen. You just have to be lucky and have a good car for a long time. You depend a lot on the material you have,” said the three-time champion in an interview with the British newspaper Times. “When I won my first title, I said that everything that comes after is an advantage, because I already have everything I wanted to achieve in Formula 1,” she added.
Verstappen experienced a fierce argument with Hamilton in 2021, the year of his first victory in Formula 1, which was only resolved in the last stage, in a controversial Abu Dhabi GP. After that season he won two more titles, both times in dominant fashion and without any major threat from his rivals, not even from the seven-time British champion, who suffered in his Mercedes.
Having or not having Hamilton as a rival, however, is not something treated with great importance by Verstappen. “I don’t need this kind of rivalry,” the Dutchman said. “Of course, we want to beat each other, but honestly, when we’re in a private setting, we’re just normal guys.”
The 2024 Formula 1 season begins on March 2, in Bahrain. In the previous week the riders had already traveled to the Middle Eastern country to carry out pre-season training. After a holiday period which included a visit to Brazil, together with his girlfriend Kelly Piquet, daughter of Nelson Piquet, Verstappen has already started preparing with his new coach Rupert Manwaring.
