Netflix’s Top 5: “Crazy, fascinating, revolting and overwhelming,” this series captivated subscribers this week

Number 1: Kidnapped Truth: From Dream to American Nightmare

In this docu-series inspired by true crimes, a couple who were victims of a horrific break-in and kidnapping in 2015 are ultimately accused of orchestrating it all.

Viewer rating: 3.4/5

why does it work

True crime is on the rise, and it’s Netflix that has reinvented the genre. So it’s no surprise that The Kidnapped Truth: From Dream to American Nightmare topped the top 5 series upon release. This mini-series has two main advantages: 1/ its incredible story, which reminds us of Gone Girl, but is actually a real injustice; and 2/ its short format in just three episodes, which keeps you in suspense from start to finish.

Number 2: Double trap

When Maya, an ex-soldier, suddenly sees her husband on a spy camera, who she believes has been murdered, she discovers an assassination plot rooted in the past.

Based on Harlan Coben’s novel of the same name.

Viewer rating: 3.4/5

According to Niko (4.5/5):

“Enchanting series! Full of sessions and surprises! I loved this series and the actors until the end.”

According to Clément V (4.5/5):

“Very good plot, really best cast. Constant twist. It keeps us in suspense, we think we have found the culprit(s) in each episode and in the end we never stop doubting. In short, a perfect series.”

According to JeanBo (2/5):

“All is well until the end of episode 7. The reveal is extremely disappointing and goes so far as to question the story of the series itself.”

why does it work

Released online on January 1, Harlan Coben’s series is still in the top 10, losing the top spot for the first time. Subscribers are raging over series endings, twists, and revelations that are done out of hand. If you’re yet to watch Double Trap on Netflix, here’s a sneak peek of what’s in store for you…

Number 3: Kubra

When a mechanic receives messages that seem to predict the future, he begins to believe he is talking to God and quickly becomes a messiah to a group of followers.

Viewer Rating: 3.0/5

According to Klaus Heisler (3/5):

“So, like many Turkish series, the actors are believable, the story is very engaging from the beginning. We follow a character, quite ordinary overall, who goes through an extraordinary experience. Until episode 4, frankly, it’s gold. Then the script breaks down, too bad! “

why does it work

Turkey is definitely a new breeding ground for successful series on the Netflix side. The evidence still gives us Kubra, a series that is perfectly suited to the times where artificial intelligence proclaims itself to be the messiah.

By mixing the codes of crime fiction with current themes (religion, the place of technology, etc.)

Number 4: Berlin

In full glory, Berlin gathers his talented teammates in Paris to carry out one of his most ambitious projects: to steal 44 million euros worth of jewelry in one night.

A spin-off/prequel to “La Casa De Papel” centered on the Berlin character.

Viewer rating: 2.8/5

According to Yohan Le sudiste o6 (5/5):

“But it’s amazing. I really enjoyed this spin-off of La Casa de papel. Berlin is my favorite character, I was really looking forward to seeing her. Love, laughter, fame, flight and beauty perfectly sum up this first season. The people are so nice, I can’t wait to see what happens next…”

According to Herve Lacroix (5/5):

“If you’re expecting to see a series about a heist, go ahead. I understand that not everyone likes the series. Other than that, it’s really great. There’s action. Suspense, romance and a little touch for us French, and that it takes place in Paris.”

According to DoctorPopCorn (2.5/5):

“Yeah…reeks of a watered down franchise. The plot is pretty slow in the first episode and the pacing is uneven. I was looking forward to this and I was at 9:01 this morning (that’s saying something C is clearly disappointing, the characters are barely developed, the music isn’t as good as the main In the series, the secondary actors are average.

However, the production remains of good quality, the action scenes are good. Everything seems empty and trying to tell a story (I don’t know if you know what I mean). It’s pretty average overall, especially because of the weak script. I recommend it if you are a fan, otherwise continue: the spirit of the original series seems to have completely disappeared… too bad”.

why does it work

Much anticipated by fans of La Casa de Papel, the spin-off series Berlin seems to be a success! The famous character played by Pedro Alonso returns for a crazy adventure in Paris with a special new heist idea. It’s no wonder this spin-off is among Netflix’s best picks, as this prequel series uses the same unstoppable ingredients of La Casa de Papel: love stories, crazy heists, soaring action scenes, and holy twists! Berlin remains in Netflix’s top five for the fifth week in a row. Excellent performance!

Number 5: Detective Forst

In the mountains of Poland, an inspector uses unconventional methods to investigate the strange murder of an unpopular professor.

Inspired by bestselling novels.

Viewer rating: 2.9/5

According to Lecter_H (3.5/5):

I liked his character, but also the way he conducted the investigation. It’s not perfect, but from episode 4 onward, I took the bait and devoured the entire story in one sitting.

According to Lily (2.5/5):

We have already seen it a thousand times, a plot with a serial killer and which goes back to the country’s past (war) and certain heroes, tortured heroes, always the same profile of a 30-year-old bearded policeman who combines family adventures and the search for money, the killer What a lack of originality!

According to Christine Brachausen (2/5):

This series could have been great, length, sloppy editing, constant bed scenes that spoil the plot, actors are sometimes unconvincing, events follow a lack of rigor, too bad the context is interesting and good moments all around.

why does it work

The arrival of this Polish detective series in second place in the top 10 series last week was a real surprise! But Detective Forst confirms the second week, even if the series will give up three places.

It should also be said that slightly tacky and grandiose thrillers like this one – which is not recommended for under 16s – often have the potential to do well on the platform. We also see crime stories dominate the top 5 this week, which is proof that there is a real public appetite for the genre.
