A family from the interior of MG clears the rubble from the square and creates a community garden

To make the neighborhood more beautiful, with more useful spaces and make the land more productive, the family redeveloped the abandoned land and planted food

A family from Teófilo Otoni (MG) has decided to change the face of their neighborhood, transforming free public land into a pleasant square with a community vegetable garden and orchard. Watch the video above.

Retiree Eustáquio da Silva Miglio, 74, explains that the square is located in front of the building where they live, but that it was abandoned and there was no action by the public authorities to improve the place. So he decided to transform the space with fruit trees and vegetables.

“This land was completely damaged, with construction debris, dirt and full of tall grass. I cleaned it, removed the debris, leveled the ground, added lime, added manure for fertilization and started planting fruit trees,” says Eustáquio.

While working the land, the pensioner aroused curiosity among his neighbors: “A couple passed by and asked me ‘why are you planting so many fruit trees?’. I said ‘let the square produce something and be beautiful’”, he says. So, they asked if it was possible that someone could reap the benefits. “Everything I plant is for the people,” he replied proudly.

Now, the square contains papaya, avocado, orange, lemon, mandarin, acerola, umbu-cajá and other fruits. After the planting, the city created a concrete structure to house benches and also a raised bed. Finally, the inhabitants of the region completed it with grass, flowers and a pergola with climbing plants.

Maria Aparecida dos Santos, 63, already knew how to take care of a vegetable garden and took advantage of the flowerbeds to plant seedlings of vegetables, spices, herbal teas and roots, such as gherkins, boldo, mint, turmeric, pepper and sweet potatoes. She is responsible for the daily irrigation of the produce.

“People here in the neighborhood come to pick fruit, to pick vegetables and there are always children who come here to play,” says Maria Aparecida.
