Do you know how long it takes a coconut shell to decompose in nature? According to Embrapa it takes 10 years. To minimize the impact of fruit waste on the environment, a child development worker from Salvador (BA) decided to turn coconuts into art. Watch the video above.
Isabella Araújo, 29, has an autistic and deaf son. During a visit to the doctor, she discovered that the boy could not consume cow’s milk. The alternative? Vegetable milk. The cheapest among them? The coconut one. At first she didn’t know that the new routine of preparing milk for her son would lead her to transform her professional life too.
“I found myself full of peels, because he drank so much porridge, smoothies, everything with plant-based milk. So I started making cumbuches,” says Isabella, who then created them Well done Artesayour brand of craftsmanship.
Isabella’s creativity caught people’s attention and what was supposed to be something small became bigger and bigger. She says that, from then on, she also began to study more about sustainability and reuse: “It was a turning point for me. I didn’t know that plastic, for example, lives longer than us! These are such important topics and I didn’t know it at the time. I really fell in love with the environment when I studied the decomposition time of dried coconut shells,” she explains.
There are currently more than 30 pieces in the portfolio, including bowls, mugs, bowls, plates, bags, wind chimes, spoons, soap dishes and even cell phone holders. Everything is shared with his 12 thousand followers on Instagram.
Not only your work is displayed on the profile, but also the step-by-step production of the pieces. The artisan says she plans to create a course and publicize her techniques to help other people give new meaning to coconut shell disposal and still get that extra income.
“I believe people need to be inspired. This information needs to reach them. I don’t just want to sell my art, I also want to show that it is possible to work with it,” says Isabella. “These shells, once discarded, end up in landfill and are burned to free up space. Many clog the drains in case of rain, attract many insects and help the proliferation of bacteria, bringing all this danger to the population. So talking about sustainability also means talking about the environment associated with social responsibility,” she adds.
