As True Detective Season 4 continues to descend into the darkness of Alaska, the second episode that aired this past Monday gave a big insight into its connection to the first season!
This does not happen on the side of the investigation conducted by Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Evangelina Navarro (Kali Reis). The news broke when Navarro visited Rose Agino, played by Fiona Shaw. He says Travis Kohl’s name, confirming a theory fans had before the season started.
Who is travis cole?
But to get there, you need to activate the subtitle option – whether you’re watching the series in English or French. That’s how fans noticed the spelling of Cole’s name, the same spelling as Rust Cole, played by Matthew McConaughey in the first season.
This revelation occurs when Navarro visits Rose at her cabin lost in the wild. Navarro worries about his sister Julia (aka Niviana) and thinks Rose might have some answers — especially since the latter admitted earlier that she saw Travis’ ghost walking up to her.
When Travis dies, the series reveals that Navarro found his body. He had terminal leukemia, but he wanted to die on his own terms. that’s why it’s “entered the iceAs Rose says, instead of waiting for the illness to kill him. Earlier, Travis and Rosie spent the night together.
“And then I found itNavarro said.Travis Kohl’s last gift. I had the opportunity to meet youRose replies. The rest of their conversation is quite disturbing, with Rose telling Navarro that people keep seeing dead people in this town: “I think the world is getting old and Ennis is a place where the fabric of all things is coming apart at the seams.“
In the first episode, it is Rose who discovers the bodies of the Tsalali Station scientists in the ice after Travis’s ghost appears to her and silently points her in the right direction.

In the second episode, Rose mentions that he “only comes when he wants something”, meaning that Travis’ role in this story may not be over. As Tsalal’s deliveryman tells Peter Prior (Finn Bennett) after the episode: “It’s a long, dead night. Even the dead get bored.”

When it was announced that Night Country would be set in Alaska, fans immediately began speculating about the first season via Rust Cohle. Cohles isn’t the season’s only connection to previous episodes, with the mysterious spiral symbols being one of the main leads in the Tsalal science case.
It is also mentioned that Tuttle United is the sponsoring company of Tsalali station. Remember, Billy Lee Tuttle was the reverend behind the cult that loomed large over Season 1.
In the first season, Rust Cole takes sick leave and claims he has to visit his ailing father in Alaska, a man named Travis, who has lived up north for 30 years and is dying of cancer.
Later in the season finale, Rusty says he felt his father’s presence. At the time, it seemed like another “spiritual” moment for the character. Now, Night Country speculates that Rusty may have been bonding with his father at the time.
But this all seems to have been confirmed by Issa Lopez herself – the showrunner of the series – if this post from Culture Crave on X (formerly Twitter) is to be believed:
