Charlie Chaplin has one of the biggest Oscar honors; know which one

Charlie Chaplin is a legend of cinema, but for a long time he was not loved by everyone, including the United States. The country that owns the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the traditional Oscars caused the actor and director to go into exile due to his political positions and prevented him from setting foot in his territory.

Years later, Chaplin was no longer considered an enemy of the Americans and returned to the Oscar stage to receive something better than the trophy: a 12-minute ovation from the audience.

The career of Charlie Chaplin

Charlie Chaplin was already a big name in cinema in the 1940s, having films such as “Digging for Gold” (1925), “City Lights” (1931) and “Modern Times” (1936) on his resume.

It was in that decade that the filmmaker began to express his political views considered left-wing at a time when the United States was against communism. The FBI of the then director J. Edgar Hoover had set his sights on the “threat” represented by Chaplin.

The situation did not improve with the release of “The Great Dictator” (1940), in which Charlie Chaplin criticized Adolf Hitler and military nationalism by personifying the dictator. According to Colliderit became impossible to separate the director from his political views (with which the United States did not agree).

Return and adoration at the Oscars

Two decades later, at the age of 82, Charlie Chaplin had made more films and was seeing his health deteriorate. During this period, he was awarded at several film festivals, such as Cannes and the Venice Film Festival, until he was invited to return to the United States for the 44th Oscars in 1972.

There, he would receive a lifetime achievement award. Then, once he took the stage at the awards ceremony he had previously been denied, he was applauded for 12 minutes, in what became the biggest ovation of the ceremony to date.
