After its discreet arrival on Netflix on January 19th, the Ancestral series has been making a lot of noise. The new South Korean production actually topped the platform’s top 10 most-watched series for nearly a week, a sign of success with the streaming service’s subscribers.
This six-episode detective miniseries tells the story of a young assistant to a famous university professor. After discovering that she will not inherit the position she was promised, Yoon Seo-ha learns that she has inherited a cemetery left to her by a distant uncle she never knew. This unusual heritage inspires a man who claims to be her half-brother…
Ancestral’s success is due as much to the efficiency and originality of its pace as to the reputation of its creator. The showrunner for the series is none other than Yeon Sang-ho, the director of The Last Train to Busan and also the writer of the Netflix series Hellbound. Note that the program is an adaptation of a webtoon by will Signed by Kang Tae-kyung (Sacred Divorce Bonds).
The short format of the series (barely six episodes, with an average duration of 45 minutes) enhances the addictive aspect of the program. As is often the case in Korean dramas, the codes of detective fiction and thrillers are intertwined with social issues. Conceived as a mini-series (Episode 6 also provides a resolution), Season 2 has not been picked up by Netflix, despite the success of this new production.
The Ancestors series is now available only on Netflix.
