New Hollywood – a revolutionary period for American cinema since the late 1960s – has many giants: Francis Ford Coppola, Stanley Kubrick, Robert Altman and Peter Bogdanovich. William Friedkin has a special place among them. With such classics as The Exorcist, The French Connection, The Witch and Cruising, the filmmaker has established himself as an extreme man who pushes the boundaries with each film.
Enriched with a career spanning six decades, the director died on August 7, 2023 at the age of 87, leaving lasting memories in the minds of viewers. At the time of his death, William Friedkin was working on his last feature film, The Kane Rebellion. This latest work deals with a genre that the filmmaker was particularly fond of behind closed doors.
Pulitzer Prize
The film is adapted from Herman Woock’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Tempest at Kane in 1952. This work has become a classic, known for its many adaptations on stage and in film. One of the most famous was released in 1954 with Humphrey Bogart in the lead role.

The story unfolds entirely in a military tribunal. The second officer, Steve Merrick (Jake Lacey), is convicted of disobeying the orders of his superior, Captain Queeg (Kiefer Sutherland), who is on their ship in the middle of a storm. Attorney Greenwald (Jason Clarke) is tasked with protecting the young officer.
on the surface Kane’s Mutiny Case does not appeal to the masses. The action is static, the environment is minimalist and everything is based on the requests of the characters. But, once again, the genius of William Friedkin is at work. Thanks to the excellent direction of the actors, the result becomes exciting and looks like a real thriller.
William Friedkin and the closed session
The feature film follows Twelve Angry Men, the iconic play and film that was the subject of William Friedkin’s own 1997 television remake. Other works of the filmmaker’s career have a theatrical origin, such as Les Garçons de la bande and Bug. As a farewell, the director returns to his first love behind closed doors, allowing him to concentrate on his actors’ interpretations.
Considering his failing health, the filmmaker made his film with the big name of Hollywood, Guillermo del Toro. The Mexican director was by his side every day and even changed when the situation required. Each actor had to come as prepared as possible to do as few plays as possible.
The Kane Mutiny Case is about Lance Reddick, who plays Captain Luther Blackley in the film. The actor, who died on March 17, 2023, is releasing one of his last interpretations.
