Director Marão’s film uses creative freedom to create an “outside the box” story. Longa is voiced by Natália Lage, Guilherme Briggs and Santoro, who reiterates his desire to work in Brazilian productions even with an international career
Bizarre fish from the abyssal pits can leave the viewer lost. The animation is surreal and breaks notions of cinema and common sense. In the midst of the madness, between a sentimental cloud and a turtle on the verge of a nervous breakdown, the audience will find something common, familiar: the voice of one of Brazil’s main actors.
Rodrigo Santoro He has worked with voice on other occasions, even dubbing animations – and he says he likes having the voice as the only tool to humanize the characters. When asked about his connection with Brazilian productions, despite having a very consolidated and interesting international career, Santoro gets straight to the point.
“I have never left this Brazilian market. Now it is Bizarre fishI soon did Good morning, Veronicathen there’s the movie The other side of paradise“, he says. “I continue to work. I have always done at least one project in Brazil. It might have been a year or two because I spent more time out there, but I never really separated my career.”
But here is a Brazilian story beyond all expectations. “My ass is a gorilla,” the protagonist of the animation exclaims in the first minutes. A few seconds later, the director’s film Marão begins to show what it comes from: this part of the character’s body begins to actually transform into a great ape, which fights against the bad guys chasing it.
This already sets the tone for the film, which hits theaters this Thursday, January 25th. It is an animation that goes beyond all obviousness and tells of a shape-shifting woman, a turtle suffering from obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and a cloud that is ashamed of raining: all three looking for pieces of an ancient object that can help the protagonist’s grandfather.
“He’s very brave artistically. [É um filme] who decides to go outside the pre-established rules, from the normative. However, all this is permeated by a well-constructed dramatic line and with a very human, true and truly beautiful motivation”, says Natália Lage, who voices the protagonist, when Estadao.
Although it is a completely “outside the box” story, Bizarre fish from the abyssal pits It is far from being an incomprehensible film. Indeed: the feature film even has a very linear narrative, with a beginning, a middle part and an end, even if the character’s true desire is only fully revealed at the end. Lage’s dubbing, together with Santoro (in the role of the turtle) and Guilherme Briggs, veteran voice actor of franchises such as History of the toy AND Transformers (like the cloud), it also helps.
“When he called me, I was all for it. The bizarre is with us,” Briggs says. According to him, it is a more pleasant job to do precisely because of the freedom that comes from the project. “When you double something from the outside, many managers come to mediate. Until you get to the soul of the project, it takes time. There is manager A, manager B, the one who gives the tip. When you’re the original voice, it’s totally different. It is more exciting“.
Brazilian cinema and its possibilities
Just as the feeling for Natália and Briggs is one of excitement for creativity, the same thing happens to the audience on the other side. Watch the Bizarre fish it is delving into an extremely authorial plot, interpreted almost entirely by Marão, who wanted to use lines that carry a certain imperfection to remember that there is someone who controls the pencil.

This was the director’s goal. “I wanted to spend more time with my creations, with that universe. I didn’t want to stay closed in a box,” he explains. “Since it’s my project, I can exaggerate more. I was my own boss in this job, being able to improvise. It’s a very simple story, which gives me space to make up scenes inspired by what’s happened in my life.”
This also gives an even greater freshness to national animation. It proves that we can create amazing stories. “With animation you can do anything. You can tell any Brazilian story, from any era, using your imagination with universal stories,” says Guilherme Briggs.
