In the film industry’s relentless attempt to capitalize on successful franchises, spin-offs (derived from successful works that explore different aspects of the original) are not always able to replicate the success of their original counterparts.

Sometimes, the desire to explore already consolidated universes ends up generating sensational failures or productions of dubious taste. That said, we decided to list 10 of the worst spin-offs in cinema.

Failed movie spin-offs

This spin-off of the “Ice Age” series follows the adventures of Buck Wild and the two possum brothers, Crash and Eddie. With a 19% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the film received mostly negative reviews from both critics and audiences.

Many have complained about the franchise’s decline in quality, ranking this film as the low point of the series. The criticisms concern the low quality of the animation and rendering, the absence of Scrat and the other main characters of the original saga, as well as a boring story and the lack of charisma on the part of the new protagonists.

The spin-off of the “X-Men” film series, “The New Mutants,” was supposed to hit theaters in 2018. However, production faced repeated delays until it hit theaters in 2020.

However, the film was poorly received by the public and critics, who considered it generic and uninteresting. The film has an approval rating of just 36% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

The first film in the “Harry Potter” prequel spin-off series, “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” performed well at the box office and was well received by critics.

Originating from the “Conjuring” universe, the supernatural horror “The Nun” achieved huge success at the box office. However, the production received unfavorable reviews from specialized critics.

The general agreement of the analyzes highlights the lack of a coherent narrative logic in the film. The work has an extremely low approval rating, reaching only 24% acceptance on the Rotten Tomatoes website.

“The Nun 2”, in addition to being successful at the box office, was considered an advance in terms of quality. However, the film was also poorly received overall and has an approval rating of just 52% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Derived from “Daredevil – The Man Without Fear” (2003), “Elektra” features Jennifer Garner reprising her role as the highly trained assassin who gives the production its name.

The film was a critical and commercial failure. With an approval rating of 11% on Rotten Tomatoes, overall reviews highlighted problems with the plot.

Another spin-off from the “Conjuring” universe, “Annabelle” explores the story behind the doll that appears briefly in the first film of the original series.

Despite being a box office success, the film was poorly received by pundits. “Annabelle” has a 28% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the film won two sequels which were rated better.

Another spin-off from the “X-Men” film series, “Origins: Wolverine” tells the origin of the hero played by Hugh Jackman.

However this film was massacred by critics. The complaints were general, both in relation to the direction, editing, pacing and plot. However, according to experts, the film still achieved two more successful sequels in terms of quality.

Although not produced directly by Pixar (but by Walt Disney Pictures), “Aviões” is a spin-off of “Cars”. The plot follows an agricultural sprayer plane who dreams of competing in air races.

Despite performing well at the box office and gaining a sequel, “Aviões” was received negatively. With a 25% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the film’s plot and humor were rated poor.

The first film starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was “The Scorpion King”. It is a spin-off of “The Mummy” series and serves as a prelude to the events of the series.

With a 41% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the film received negative reviews from critics, who pointed to the faltering direction of the work.

Considered one of the worst spin-offs in history, “Supergirl” is a derivative of the classic “Superman” film series starring Christopher Reeve. The work is set after the events of Superman III (1983), with Helen Slater in the role of Kara Zor-El/Linda Lee/Supergirl.

In addition to being massacred by specialized critics, the film was a failure at the box office.
