Griselda: Why You Won’t See Pablo Escobar in the New Netflix Series

We know the story of Pablo Escobar, but we know a little less about the story of Griselda Blanco. And yet, this famous Colombian drug trafficker and prominent member of the Medellin cartel has established a successful business in Florida, especially in Miami, where he set the city on fire. In 6 episodes, the series, led by the unrecognizable Sofia Vergara, retraces its rise.

Behind Griselda is the team that adapted Escobar’s life in Narcos and tackled the Mexican cartels spin-off. The two series are logically connected, even if the producers made a drastic choice not to mix the two worlds, as producer Eric Newman explained:

“It was the only way to do it. For several reasons, we decided to focus on Griselda’s story and Sophia’s incredible performance. It cannot become a weak link in the chain. We worked on Narcos for a very long time. Then we already knew the character of Griselda. But we couldn’t integrate it into the series. His story is too interesting to sacrifice his character in Narcos. He should have had his own series.

For Narcos fans, unfortunately, you won’t be seeing the incredible Wagner Moura on your screens again, nor the DEA agents played by Pedro Pascal and Boyd Holbrook, as their characters only joined the DEA in the 80s and 90s, and Griselda is set in the 70s.

But the most observant will recognize in the first episode the actor Alberto Amman, Pacho Herrera’s interpreter in Narcos and who plays a completely different character here (Griselda’s husband), implying from the first minute that there are not two plays going on. in the same world.

Note that Griselda is not set in Colombia, but entirely in the United States. Some references to the Medellin cartel are still made – especially regarding the Ochoa family, but it stops there…
