Available on Prime Video since last Friday, Expats offers a new lead role in the series for Nicole Kidman. Set in the vibrant city of Hong Kong, the story revolves around three women: Margaret, Hilary and Mercy, American expatriates.
Everyone goes through trials. Margaret (Nicole Kidman), a mother of three, leads an ideal life until she undergoes a drastic change. Hilary is unwilling to respond to her husband’s desire to be a father, while Mercy, a recent Columbia graduate of Korean descent, is building a new life for herself. Their paths cross as tragedy strikes them all.
Created by Lulu Wang, the series deals with the issue of class privilege. Through the story of these three women, the series raises questions about morality and also shows that people who live seemingly envious lives have different experiences.
Not a true story
Lulu Wang is the creator of the TV series she adapted from the novel Expatriates Janice YK Lee was released in 2016. Although the story itself is not based on reality, it is inspired by real experiences. Janice I.K. Lee, an American author, shared Compulsive reader His writing process for the book:
“When I realized that these women lived in the same world as me, I thought more and more about this place where I lived. I was a constant observer of my own life, trying to spot patterns and behaviors.“
He adds: “In a way, it was easy because I only needed to live my life, but I wanted to be fair and just to all the people who also lived in this world.“.
Similarly, Lulu Wang began living in Beijing until her parents were deported in 1989. He moved to the United States and confided that he only visited Hong Kong as a tourist and that he did not have the opportunity to understand the soul of the city. The series allowed him to better understand his roots. She brings her own experience as an immigrant to tell the story of these three women, which lends authenticity to the narrative.
