With Jair’s expulsion at the start of the match, Vasco scored what would have been the winning goal in the 53rd minute, but conceded the equaliser, making it 2-2
With a second half of great emotions, Bangu and Vasco drew 2-2, in the fourth round of the Campeonato Carioca. In added time Payet even gave Cruz-Maltino the lead, but in the next move João Victor left everything the same with a penalty. It should be noted that Gigante da Colina played practically the entire match with one less, as midfielder Jair was sent off in the 4th minute of the first half.
With this result Vasco reaches eight points, provisional second place in the Guanabara Cup. Bangu added his first point in four games played, in 11th place. In the next round, Cruz-Maltino will face Nova Iguaçu, at 18:10 (Brasilia time) next Wednesday (31st). The team from the West Zone of Rio will face Fluminense on Thursday 1 February at 9.30pm.
Vasco loses Jair who is sent off early
The match started with Vasco commanding the match. However, after four minutes, midfielder Jair committed a hard foul on Walney and received a red card from the referee. Cruz-Maltino players were outraged by the decision, but since there is no VAR in Carioca at this stage, the on-field decision remained valid. Despite the disadvantage, Colina’s team maintains possession of the ball and remains above their rival, without however creating many opportunities.
Coach Ramón Díaz noticed that Vasco was losing their midfield with Jair’s expulsion and introduced Zé Gabriel in place of striker David in the 26th minute. However, three minutes later, the team lost Paulinho to injury. The player felt pain in his knee after the blow, tried to return, but he failed, giving way to Praxedes. Cruz-Maltino balanced his actions in the central sector of the pitch, but remained uninspired, without posing an effective threat to Bangu, who scored well and barely left the defense. The best opportunity came at the end of the first half with a pass from Payet to Piton, who crossed for Vegetti. But the Argentine didn’t dominate from the spot and ended up wasting the opportunity.
Praxedes opened the scoring with an action on the left
Vasco started the second half with two changes to make the team more offensive, especially on the flanks. And after just two minutes he opened the scoring. Payet, always him, was excellent on the counterattack and passed a great ball to Piton on the left. The full-back crossed for Praxedes, who only scored 1 – 0. The Cruz-Maltina team continued to overtake Bangu, who didn’t seem to have even one more. At nine, almost second. Piton crosses for João Victor, who heads the crossbar. Pumita comes close to scoring on the rebound.
Payet continues to be the great master of Vasco’s midfield, especially after the team’s reconstruction following Jair’s dismissal. All dangerous moves passed through the Frenchman’s feet. However, in an unassuming move, Bangu equalised. Canela takes a risk from the edge of the area on the left and gets an incredible mistake from Léo Jardim. The game became more open, with Bangu getting excited and taking more risks. In the 33rd minute, Gabryel Freitas put a ball on the crossbar. Then, defender Felipe Soares caught Vegetti from behind and, since he already had a yellow card, he was sent off from the West Zone team.
With ten players on each side, Vasco moved up, exploring the flanks, especially with Piton. With a movement from the left, the player crosses and the ball falls to Vegetti in the six yard area, but the Argentine isolates it. At 40 it was Bangu’s turn to almost move on. Cleyton takes the corner from outside the area and Léo Jardim redeems himself with a great save. The additions were full of movement and moves for both teams. In the 53rd minute Cruz-Maltino doubled the lead with a beautiful goal from Payet, who left the defender on the ground and sent it into a corner. However, on the next play, Medel ended up taking a penalty. João Victor took the penalty and scored the equalizer, giving the final numbers to the match.
