Former President Jair Bolsonaro made a statement this Sunday, age 28, in a live broadcast on social media
Former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) has denied creating a “parallel Abin” for the purpose of spying on his political opponents while he was president. He declared it during a live broadcast on social media on Sunday evening, the 28th.
Together with his sons Flávio, Carlos and Eduardo, Bolsonaro defended federal deputy Alexandre Ramagem (PL-RJ) and former director of the Brazilian Intelligence Agency (Abin). Jair Bolsonaro is accused of an alleged espionage plan by the agency, known as “Parallel Abin”, which would monitor opponents for the benefit of his sons in politics.
Bolsonaro said live that “Ramagem is a fantastic guy” and that the “Abin parallel” did not exist. He reiterated that he was “not interested” in knowing who the Minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Gilmar Mendes, or Rodrigo Maia met with. They were cited by the former president because they were allegedly monitored.
The former president said that no official intelligence information had reached him, neither from Abin, nor from the federal police, nor from the navy or the army. “Once I went to the army intelligence center, people held a demonstration, [falei:] ‘and then nothing comes to me, stay here with you’,” he said live.
“When I talked about Abin, about parallel intelligence, there is a problem, the Amazon is on fire, I call Colonel Menezes, ‘Menezes, what’s going on with this issue of fires, why is the press talking about it,’ he tells me the boy. This is my intelligence. I call a barracks corporal, a reserve soldier, an ordinary citizen, or my way of acting”, he reiterated.

The former president also said he was in the habit of calling military posts to obtain information. “This was my intelligence, that is reliable, because for these officers, with all due respect, nothing was enough for me. I talk to people I trust.”
Investigation on “Parallel Abin”
The Federal Police is conducting an operation to investigate whether Jair Bolsonaro’s allies in Abin have used other espionage tools in addition to the First Mile software, which shows the geolocation of cellphones in real time. According to the PF, the agency’s then director, Alexandre Ramagem, took advantage of his position to “encourage and cover up” the use of an espionage program.
The investigation suspects that Ramagem used the Abin facility to try to produce evidence and reports in defense of Flávio and Jair Renan Bolsonaro, the former president’s sons, and spy on the former president’s political opponents, such as Joice Hasselmann and Rodrigo Maia .
According to the PF, Abin would have been used to monitor the public prosecutor responsible for the case of councilor Marielle Franco, murdered in March 2018. The searches against Ramagem were authorized by a decision of Minister Alexandre de Moraes, who classified the former’s position as director of Abin as “of a very serious nature”.
The First Mile program, acquired by Abin, allows tracking of anyone’s geolocation data using cell phone data. With the tool it is possible to track up to 10 thousand people per year.
