The final result will be announced on March 1st
Italy’s gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 0.7% in 2023, decelerating sharply from the 3.7% expansion recorded the previous year.
The result, still preliminary, was released on Tuesday (30) by the National Institute of Statistics (Istat) and is slightly lower than the forecasts of Giorgia Meloni’s government, which expected an increase of 0.8%. The final numbers are expected to be released on March 1st.
Already recently the Italian Minister of Economy, Giancarlo Giorgetti, had signaled the risk that the GDP would fall below the government’s forecasts due to the start of the war between Israel and Hamas on 7 October.
In the fourth quarter of 2023, the Italian economy grew by 0.2% compared to the previous three months and by 0.5% compared to the same period in 2022.
According to Istat, the result for the October-December period is the result of a decrease in the agriculture, forestry and fishing sectors and an expansion in industry and services. .
