I’ve worked closely with directors, tried a few things and found something that I’m very proud of and can’t wait for people to see and hear. This is an animated voiceover narrative. It is not a live action movie. I will not wear a plumber costume on the run. I’m voicing an animated character, and it’s up-to-date and unlike anything you’ve ever heard in the world of Mario.
Chris Pratt’s comments come just days after Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri said that Pratt “gave a solid performance” as Mario and that the film was “three-quarters complete”. Meledandri also said in November that unlike Charles Martinet’s version of Mario we’ve heard in games for decades, this film version of the character won’t have an overblown Italian accent. Beyond that, we still don’t know what Pratt’s Mario will look like, but according to the actor it will be a rather unique version.
Mario will be the fifth animated character in Chris Pratt’s resume and the actor previously voiced Emmet Brickowski the lego movie and its sequel, Barley Lightfoot in BeforeJake in an episode of the Batman and Cooper Daniels in some episodes of Ben 10: Ultimate Alien. He would be the second actor to play Mario in the film, with Bob Hoskins playing the role in the 1993 live-action film. Super Mario Bros.. Pratt will also play Garfield in a fully animated film, replacing Bill Murray, who voiced the orange tabby cat in two hybrid live-action / animated films.
Chris Pratt will join the Mario Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, Sebastian Maniscalco as Foreman Spike and Charles Martinet in unknown cameos. Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, who worked The Teen Titans Go! At Cinemahe directed the feature film Minions: The Rise of GruMatthew Fogel wrote the script.
The Mario The film is scheduled for release on April 7, 2023.
