Summary

Rio de Janeiro broke the record for hospital admissions for dengue fever and 10,000 cases were recorded in January alone; in the national panorama there are 43.7 thousand cases and 24 confirmed deaths.

Rio de Janeiro broke the record for dengue hospitalizations in the city’s history last January. The information was given by the Minister of Health, Daniel Soranz, during a press conference promoted by the city hall, on Friday 2nd, to announce an emergency plan against the dengue epidemic experienced by the city.

According to Soranz, 362 people have been hospitalized this month alone. Regarding the number of infected people, the secretary stated that only in January did the number approach that recorded the previous year.

“We see the upper limit clearly indicated, much higher than what we expected. And this constitutes an epidemic situation. We have an increase in the number of cases sustained in the historical series, with repercussions on the patient clinics and on the care network. Also constituting an epidemic” It is necessary that the number of cases is spread across multiple regions of the city. And this happens in the city of Rio. In the last 90 days, the curve is upward, we have had, in a single day 569 cases were reported,” said Daniel Soranz.

  • In the month of January there were more than 10 thousand cases of dengue in Rio de Janeiro;
  • The value represents an incidence rate of 160.68 per 100 thousand inhabitants;
  • During 2023 there were 22,959 cases;
  • Across the country the numbers are also high. There are 43.7 thousand registered cases, with 24 confirmed deaths and 163 under investigation.

The three states with the highest incidence rate are the Federal District, Minas Gerais and Acre. The state of Rio de Janeiro appears in seventh place, with 17,700 cases of the disease. The highest incidence is recorded in the adult population, especially in the age groups between 30 and 39 years and between 40 and 49 years.

Mayor Eduardo Paes also commented on the situation and asked for the population’s collaboration to reduce dengue mosquito epidemics. “The absolute majority of cases are caught at home or near the place where they live due to absolute carelessness due to the history of water stagnation. We present the measures that we are going to adopt, but I make a strong appeal to the population that it makes no sense point the finger at governments or blame mosquitoes. We, as citizens, end up creating an environment conducive to the proliferation of dengue,” he said.

Municipality measures

The municipality has announced some strategies to fight dengue. These include the creation of the Emergency Operations Center (COE-Dengue); the opening of ten disease service centers distributed throughout the municipal area; dedicating beds for dengue patients in municipal hospitals; the use of smoke cars in regions with the highest incidence of cases and mandatory entry into closed and abandoned properties.

Next Monday, the 5th, the first care center for dengue patients will be inaugurated at the CMS Raphael de Paula Souza, in Curicica, in the West Zone.
