The new list of suitable candidates should be published by Monday
A Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) canceled on Friday 2 the list of candidates approved in Sisu (Unified Selection System) 2024 and who were invited to pre-register at the institute. Sisu is the platform of the Ministry of Education (MEC) that allows students to access higher education through the grades obtained in National high school leaving exam (And neither).
In a note, the UFRJ specifies that the deletion of the lists was done due to “technical problems”, without providing further details. In the same press release, the university specifies that the new list of names should be released by Monday the 5th.
“The Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), through the Dean of University Studies and the General Superintendency for Affirmative Actions, Diversity and Accessibility, informs that, for technical reasons, the list of candidates is cancelled( il) for pre-registration for the regular call?, said UFRJ.
This Friday morning, Mario Prata, the university’s central student directory (DCE), said that UFRJ left students with ample competition in the first semester and quota students in the second.
An update to the quota law changed the way Sisu is classified and began to determine that candidates with quota in federal institutions of higher education (Ifes) compete, first, in the list contested by all, the so-called competition wide.
If this candidate has a cut-off score higher than the required one, he or she will be approved by this broad competition list. Otherwise, the candidate will then compete for the vacant positions reserved by the Quota Law (students graduating from public schools; blacks, mixed-race, indigenous, from families with income, students with disabilities and quilombolas).
The DCE claims, however, that quota candidates who did not reach the cut-off score to be approved by the open competition were not included in the list of quota holders to enter the UFRJ in this first semester, and only ended up in the list for the second semester.
The UFRJ did not explain the reasons for deleting the list of those approved in pre-registration. But, in another statement sent to journalists on Friday evening, the institution emphasizes that “the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro assures society as a whole that no group will be harmed by its access and its stay in this institution”, and reiterated that “Sisu’s new price will be published by Monday (5/2)”.
On Friday evening, the DCE said the university had informed the group that “the lists being re-analysed will be split to ensure that both quota holders and broad competition are split 50% each per term”.
UFRJ was contacted for the report but said it had no information on the re-evaluation of the lists.
The MEC investigates irregular disclosure of results
The Ministry of Education (MEC) reported on Friday 2, that the provisional results of the Unified Selection System (Sisu), the main access to Brazilian public higher education, have been improperly disclosed for 25 minutes, before the final analysis of the file. In a statement, the agency also specifies that the case, which occurred on Tuesday 30th, is “rigorously investigated”.
According to the MEC, the failure occurred on the morning of the 30th, when the not yet approved data became public. The instability of the system led the Ministry to postpone the official publication of the results by one day, which were published on Wednesday 31st. The winning students will have until February 7th to register.
