Knife attack leaves injured at Paris train station

The attacker, from Mali, has an Italian residence permit

A man stabbed at least three people at Gare de Lyon, one of the main train stations in Paris, France, and was arrested by local authorities this Saturday (3).

The suspect was identified as a 32-year-old Malian citizen who presented his Italian residence permit documents to the authorities, French media, including the newspaper “Le Parisien”, reported.

According to a report from the local police station, the attack occurred around 8am (local time) and left at least one person in serious condition and two others with minor injuries. Due to the attack, public transport was affected and underwent changes in operation.

Paris police prefect Laurent Nunez visited the train station and said the attack was considered an isolated incident by authorities, who did not “suggest that it was an act of terrorism.”

He further explained that the man “is of Malian nationality and has been in Italy since 2016, with a fully valid residence permit, issued in 2019”. For Nunez the suspect “clearly suffers from psychiatric problems”.

However, the causes of the attack are still under investigation.

According to initial information, the man lives in Montalto Dora, in the Turin area, where he holds authorization for subsidiary protection. .
