Kamala’s origin is more complicated than we might think.
Spoilers for ‘Ms Marvel’ below
If you have spent too much time thinking about if Kamala Khan is an Inhuman in the Disney+ series… you are not the only one. It seemed like the creators of ‘Ms Marvel’ had been going to great lengths to hint that Kamala (Iman Vellani), like her comic book equivalent, might have been of Kree descent.
Unfortunately we were wrong. emosido deceived. Kamala is not the Inhuman we thought she was, or at least not the kind of Inhuman we assumed.
The young woman doesn’t have the blue blood running through her veins that would make her a descendant of the Kree, but rather she is one of the ClanDestines (or The Clandestines, a group often referred to as Djinn). This episode three reveal may have left you scratching your head. After all, it is the first mention of the underground (or Djinn) in the MCU and little is known of its origin within the cinematographic universe. So who exactly are they and how do they fit into the franchise?
Who are the Clandestinos?
Its history is quite long, but, in short, The Underground began with a man named Adam. In the year 1168, this man had a vision of a mysterious woman who gave him powers, including immortality and invulnerability. This woman turned out to be a Djinn named Elayth.
Elayth had been trapped inside a gem by a wizard. Adam was able to free Elayth and the two fell in love and had children. Those descendants inherited Elayth’s powers in different ways, becoming The Underground. Kamala, along with her great-grandmother Aisha (Mehwish Hayat), are among those descendants.

Not all descendants seem to inherit these same gifts, as Kamala’s brother Aamir (Saagar Shaikh) is powerless, nor is her mother Muneeba (Zenobia Shroff), nor is her grandmother. In the last episode, when Kamala’s father Yusuf (Mohan Kapoor) talks to Bruno (Matt Lintz) about the Djinn, they are spoken of as “supernatural beings of prehistoric folklore”.
In the real world, Djinn derive from Islamic mythology. Just like the asgardians of the MCU, which are inspired by Norse mythology, the introduction of the Djinn could be Marvel’s way of connecting Kamala’s powerful lineage with her religion and culture to build a more complete and, frankly, interesting backstory.
What does this mean for the Marvel world?

While this latest twist on Kamala’s origin offers an opportunity to tell a rich and intriguing narrative, it also means that, once again, the full story of the Inhumans is yet to be told in the saga.
Some fans have already been quite disappointed with this; answers on Twitter in three, two, one…

However, if you’re still hoping for a Kree connection, don’t give up just yet. During Kamala’s talk with Najma (Nimra Bucha), before she went berserk and turned on her, Najma revealed something interesting about her powers.
She told Kamala that she and the rest of the Underground were able to find Kamala because they felt Noor’s presence when he put on the bracelet. The same bracelet that unlocked Kamala’s powers.

During that conversation, Najma revealed that she and her group are from the Noor dimension and that there is something of Noor within them. Which means there is Noor inside of her like Aisha. Interestingly, the flashback scene at the beginning also revealed something interesting. When the bracelet was first recovered by his group in India in 1942, it was removed from a severed hand. The corpse whose bracelet was ripped off was blue.
As we know, it is the same complexion as the Kree aliens, which implies that the bracelet belonged to or was stolen by the Kree.

Moments later, Aisha wore the bracelet and had a vision that viewers couldn’t seealthough it is interesting that this Kree bracelet or bracelet associated with the Kree not only gave Aisha the vision, but also allowed her to bring her family home.
Not much is known about the Noor dimension or if it has any connection to the Kree.. The only thing we can be sure of is that the creator of ‘Ms Marvel’ (one of the best current series on Disney +), Bisha K Ali, is not afraid to break the formulas of comics.
While this may not be identical to the Kamala origin story we’re familiar with on paper, we wouldn’t rule out a connection to the Inhumans yet.
