French cinema has an enviable tradition, which it keeps very much alive, of raising rugs on controversial issues. Just take a look at the billboard to verify it. It has just done so with the presidential elections in ‘The World of Yesterday’ (Diastème, 2022) and with the relentless labor management of multinationals in ‘A New World’ (Stéphane Brizé, 2022).
Following that line, ‘Promises in Paris’ sets its sights on the back room and the power games of municipal politics. The approach of the plot creates curiosity and there are priceless moments, which are like looking through a keyhole in the secret meetings of politicians. Isabelle Huppert embroiders, with that coldness, a trademark of the house, the distance imposed by power and her position as mayor; but it is the colossal Reda Kateb, her right-hand man, who makes the film his own. This is a drama, but narrated in the key of a thriller, and Thomas Kruithof creates an atmosphere so intense that it generates expectations that are not fully met. The same thing happened to him in ‘Witness’, his previous film.
