Last Thursday, Netflix revealed its 2024 lineup with an impressive list of upcoming movies and series. But some of the films that were long pre-announced for 2024 are no longer part of the final list. Even if the platform indicates that its lineup is not final and that it is likely to change, we can be sure that we will not see these three blockbusters this year.
The Old Guard 2
Search your memory a little and go back to 2020, the year of the release of the movie “The Old Guard”, the adaptation of the comic book of the same name, carried by Charlize Theron. The film scored big on Netflix when it was released in July and was quickly greenlit for a sequel.
Green light, but change of director. Enter Gina Prince-Bythewood, the first black woman to direct a big-budget comic book movie. Victoria Mahoney replaces him and takes the reins of directing the second installment, The Old Guard 2. Filming took place from June to October 2022, but there has been no news since then!
Considering that it’s been almost 18 months since the film ended, his absence from the 2024 film is concerning. To the point where I wonder if The Old Guard 2 will suffer the same fate as The Mothership with Halle Berry, canceled even though filming is complete.
electric state
The most notable absence in this 2024 is clearly The Electric State. The big-budget film starring Chris Pratt, Millie Bobby Brown and Michelle Yeoh, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, was set for release last February, according to a Collider article.
Netflix is betting big on this movie. The Russos bought the rights to the graphic novel in December 2017, but the adaptation took years to develop. The film was already planned by Universal Pictures, but the deal fell through due to financial constraints.
Despite various setbacks, The Electric State will officially hit Netflix in 2022. And we’re talking about a $200 million budget! It is very surprising that there is no news there…
Destruction
The third movie that is sorely missing is Havoc with Tom Hardy! Pure action film directed by Gareth Evans, also starring Forest Whitaker and Timothy Olyphant.
Filming here also ended in October 2021! Some people think that Gareth Evans, who is known for his meticulousness and presence in the editing room, actually edits!
But according to the paper Insider, filming would create a production problem. This gives some context as to what may have caused this film to be delayed. But the lack of recognition of its current status is still troubling.
