What is it about?

Pierre Leprie was born in Le Havre, with oil and salt in his blood. A man of all struggles, his political and trade union loyalties made him a respected figure among the dockers. But on the evening of his 60th birthday, while his loved ones gather for a birthday party, everything falls apart. His youngest son, Simon, was arrested behind the wheel of a car that his brother, Genie, a dealer, had lent him for the evening. A kilogram of cocaine was found in the chassis.

Season 1 of De Grace begins airing this Thursday, February 8 and ends on Thursday, February 15 (three episodes are offered each night).

Is it worth checking out?

De Grace tells the story of a tragic family fresco that takes place in Le Havre. The city in the Seine-Maritime department is also presented to the audience as a full member of Leprieur. Its port and its activities are at the center of the story, as Pierre, the patriarch, is an important dock worker…

By juxtaposing the latter and its relationship, the series explores themes of redemption and forgiveness, but also emancipation. This dark story plunges us into the little-known and closed world of dock workers, where some are sometimes tempted to go underground in exchange for large sums of money in order to earn a better life.

Alas, it doesn’t take long for the clan to see its tenuous balance upset by the sudden disappearance of one of their own… Already disjointed and riven, recriminations erupt mercilessly among our disillusioned characters! Panayiot’s Pascoe, who offers his first dramatic performance here, appears on screen in this register with poise and conviction. His partners are also very good.

Vincent Mael Cardona’s pictures are beautiful, although sometimes very dark, and the music is interesting to work with. In this way, Le Havre is sublimated into de Grace, and the whole mystical dimension derives from a place of commodity exchange where anything can happen… and even the worst.

This dark story is punctuated by dead hero interventions that seem sluggish because of their repetition. Finally, the seriousness with which leprechaun problems are described is sometimes overwhelming. It also feels a few lengths and a hint of boredom can unfortunately be revealed…

De Grace nevertheless remains an intense and careful work thanks to its production, soundtrack and acting. A few breaths on this suffering sea would certainly revive everything. Discovered this Thursday, February 8 on Arte from 8:55 p.m.
