How “The Umbrella Academy” dealt with Elliot Page’s transition

When Elliot Page (from “Juno” and “Beyond Death”) announced his gender change two years ago, despite fan support, many wondered how it would affect his role on “The Umbrella Academy” series. After all, for two seasons Page played Vanya Hargreeves.

The answer came this week with the release of the third season of the series, in which Vanya became Viktor, also taking the actor from real life to fiction.

The change is not shown abruptly. In the first episode nothing changes, but in the second Vanya becomes Viktor with the help of a hairdresser from the Obsidian Hotel. In the background, we hear dialogue from Sissy (Marin Ireland) saying the following: “You don’t realize the box you’re in until someone comes and lets you out.”

After a shorter haircut, Viktor introduces himself to his brothers again. The main detail of this change is that the focus is not on Viktor, but rather on the discussion of whether or not to make peace with their new enemies at the Sparrow Academy.

“Who chose you, Vanya?” asks Diego (David CasteƱada). “It’s Viktor,” Page’s character replies. “That’s what I am, that’s what I’ve always been,” he adds. After a few seconds of silence from Diego, Klaus (Robert Sheehan) and Cinco (Aidan Gallagher), Viktor asks “is this a problem for any of you?”. Everyone answers no.

Cinque adds: “Really happy for you, Viktor.” In the next instant, the subject returns to the main plot, and so the transition from Vanya to Viktor occurs without major trauma.

Despite this, this isn’t the last time the reference to Vanya appears in the series. In episode 3, Luther (Tom Hopper), who was not present in the previous scene, still refers to the character of Page by his previous name when he is informed that the change has occurred.

“Do we have to say something? Make some formal gesture? Welcome him as brothers?” Luther asks Diego. “By God, no,” says Diego. “Take it, man, don’t say anything and don’t be weird.”

The third season of “The Umbrella Academy” is now available on Netflix. Watch the trailer below.
