Oscar will gain a new category, Best Cast, from 2026

A Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will include a new category in the Oscarthe biggest cinema award, starting from its 98th edition, scheduled to take place in 2026. According to information from Varietyfilms released from 2025 onwards will have the chance to compete for Best Cast, which will join the 23 existing categories.

This is the first time in more than twenty years that the Academy has included a new category. The last one was Best Animation, in 2001, which awarded Shrek in 2022, inaugurating the new feature. Now, with nearly 160 casting directors as Academy members, the Oscar will recognize the work of these professionals.
