The series Mr & Mrs Smith was supposed to be the reason for a summit meeting between Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag) and Donald Glover (Atlanta), who had already worked together on Solo: A Star Wars Story.
From this collaboration and new co-participation came the desire to film and play a series together, which was therefore to be Mr. and Mrs. Smith. The two screenwriters and actors even broke the news in 2021 with much fanfare on social media.
The duo had to work closely with Francesca Sloan (Seven Seconds), co-creator of this remake of Doug Liman’s film, Angelina Jolie, and Brad Pitt, who also serves as showrunner.
But surprisingly, a few months after this project was announced, Phoebe Waller-Bridge left the series and was replaced by Maya Erskine (PEN15, Obi-Wan Kenobi). During the sensational announcement, the studios cited creative disagreements that led to the departure of Fleabag’s creator.
“Some marriages just don’t work.”
Two years later, Phoebe Waller-Bridge confirmed this explanation The Hollywood Reporter and expressed no resentment or enmity for this departure which he had made in his soul and conscience, for he was really interested in this series:
“I’ve been working on this show for six months with all my heart and mind, and I’m really into it – I still am. And I know it’s going to be great. But sometimes it’s about knowing how to go at the right time. You don’t want to get in the way of the vision. Creative collaboration is a marriage.” It’s like, and some marriages don’t work.”
He explains that he wanted to pitch well for Amazon Studios “bet on it”. He describes himself as “Control from a creative point of view”Phoebe Waller-Bridger felt that Amazon understood her: “They’ve been with me through this whole process where I’m like, ‘I’m almost there, but I want it to be amazing.’.
Taking yourself out of the equation
For the sake of the Mr. and Mrs. Smith series, Phoebe Waller-Bridge preferred to be taken out of the equation and given a seat. Even if we wanted Fleabag to be the creator of Prime Video Fiction, the result of the duo Donald Glover and Maya Erskine is very successful.
For her part, Phoebe Waller-Bridge has starred in Indiana Jones and the Hour and is working on other personal projects as part of her partnership with Amazon Studios.
