Disney Plus: What do we know about the end of password sharing?

Disney+ will follow Netflix’s lead and begin blocking password sharing in the US. Streaming will begin this block from March 14 for customers who already have an account. However, new customers can no longer share. The news was released by the Disney group in an email.

Disney Chief Financial Officer Hugh Johnston also said during a press conference that there will be the option to pay an additional fee and add users who live in other households. However, it was not specified what amount will be charged.

It’s worth mentioning that streaming comes from a wave of subscriber losses following price hikes in the US and Canada. In the last quarter of 2023, approximately 1.3 million fewer subscribers were registered. The number went from 112.6 million to 111.3 million at the end of the year, even impacting the record that the service had achieved in the previous quarter (from August to October): the total number of subscribers, including other markets, fell from 150.2 million to 149.6 million.

Sharing Disney+ passwords in other countries

It is not yet expected that this measure will arrive in Brazil, but it is undeniable that this is a trend that could materialize soon. The first country to suffer from the measure was Canada, which ended sharing at the end of 2023.

Disney is targeting Disney+ to add 5.5 million to 6 million subscribers in the first quarter of 2024. Hulu, which now operates under the full control of Disney, saw an increase in subscribers to the service: from 43.9 million to 45.1 million, streaming only. The platform is still working in test form. An integrated version of Hulu and Disney+ is expected to launch in March 2024.
