With seven films released in less than six years, Quentin Dupierre is currently tied with Francois Ozon and Guillaume Niclos in terms of productivity. Six months after Yannick, the director has already returned to the cinema, daaaaa!
Less a biopic about Salvador Dali than a meeting between his world and his world, in a decidedly surreal film that ignores convention and where the artist is played by six different actors. including Eduard Baer, Jonathan Cohen, Gilles Lelouch and Pio Marmay. But what did the viewers think?
Average 3.6* out of 5 from 391 ratings. Currently the second best Quentin Dupieux movie for AlloCiné internet users. Behind Yannik (3.8) and a draw with Realty.
As for Edouard Baer, this is his best opus since Emmanuelle Mouret’s Mademoiselle de Joncquières (3.9 out of 5), released in 2018. Anais Demostier, this is his best collaboration with Quentin Dupierre so far.
They liked it
“When I saw the film, I asked myself who was the genius? Dalí or Dupierre?”said Islander29 Giving it 5 out of 5. If the meeting of the artist and the filmmaker was obvious, the marriage is going well for several Internet users. This is among them. “This film, which is a royal gift to cinema and a brilliant artist (…) hurry, you don’t get what you pay for and your imagination.”
“Cruel and funny, after Yannick, the confirmation of Quentin Dupierre as one of the main directors of French cinema”presses Bob LaPunta (5 stars out of 5), while Matthew B. (same note) is lit for this “A unique and wonderful film.”
Confirmation of Quentin Dupierre as one of the essential directors of French cinema
“It’s the character, not his painting, the theme of the film. But his painting is the film. Casting is 5 star and Dali, so very good”He continues, mentioning another strong point: the artist’s translators. We see Dali skillfully interpreted by 5 or 6 talented actors who are happy to interpret a character who has been playing his own part all the time.says for example Jay Dee (3.5 out of 5).
We never remain indifferent to the story and spend a delicious moment of surrealism with three masters of the genre: Baer, Dupierre and Dali.
“We never remain indifferent to the story and spend a delicious moment of surrealism with three masters of the genre: Baer, Dupierre and Dali”in turn specifies LeFilCine (4 out of 5), clearly convinced by the actor’s first meeting with the director, from whom he emphasizes (and he is not the only one) the inventiveness that permeates this new feature film.
that Bart Sampson (4 of 5) Analyze as follows: “We also feel the DJ’s palette (Mr Dupierre’s first profession) in his use of loops and repeats, a bit like a musician mastering or remixing at will.
finally, Rock (4 out of 5) and GS27 (4.5 out of 5) highlights the strong points they consider to be a little more controversial among others: “I think some people might get bored watching the movie. But for me, I was able to watch a good movie.”– said the first. The second one sums it up like this: “Aaaaal! Just then Dupier dived in.” Buñuel I told the artist without saying it to the end.”
They didn’t like it
“It’s more duuuuuup than daaaaaal”condemns Patrick Beniacar (1.5 out of 5). “The film is inspired by the film Andalusian dog, but actually a comic version that adds nothing to Dahl’s approach. We can summarize Dali’s life and work only through his expression.”
Audiences hoping for a Dali biopic will no doubt be excited by this film, which breaks the usual codes of the genre and tries more to capture his essence than to tell the story of his life.
The film is inspired by the film The Andalusian Dog, but is actually a comic version that does not bring anything to Dali’s approach.
“If you like Dalí, see his paintings again, go to Cadaques, his Spanish home, you will enjoy it much better”concludes Ballygreen75 (0.5 out of 5), while others were not won over by Dupierre’s style, less earthy here than at Yannick.
More than the Russian doll-like structure that some appreciate, others criticize, it’s the filmmaker’s absurdist style that has turned more than one off. “I wish he would put a little more effort into making a movie that isn’t just a concept idea that won’t last over time.”thereby condemning with G (2 out of 5).
A few of the same laughs, but a lot of disappointments, and as short as they are, manage to make the film last
but Paul J (1.5 out of 5) Regular cinema goer Quentin Dupierre left here at the door: “I really like the absurd world and Dupierre’s direction, but it’s more of a ‘film object’ than a story-like film. There are still a few laughs, but a lot of disappointment, and as short as it is, the film manages to stay long.”
in total
Eduard Baer, Jonathan Cohen or Pio Marmay as Dali. and Anais Demostier as a journalist interviewing the artist. As is often the case with Quentin Dupierre, the casting is impeccable. And fans of his cinema always love his art of handling the absurd and here, capturing the essence of the artist’s work.
But too much nonsense kills nonsense for some internet users when they don’t feel sorry for this daaaaaal! Not really a biopic. Don’t forget those who have not yet come to terms with Quentin Dupierre’s style.
And you ? Go crazy! ?
