The Italian Prime Minister criticized the silence on the ‘Foibe’ tragedy
The Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, went to the city of Trieste to participate in a ceremony in honor of the victims of the Foibe massacre, one of the most tragic episodes linked to the country’s participation in the Second World War.
The head of government regretted the silence that surrounded the tragedy, which caused the death of between 5,000 and 17,000 Italians, as well as defining the episode as “unforgivable”.
“I am here to once again ask for forgiveness on behalf of the institutions of this Republic for the guilty silence that has surrounded the facts for decades and to pay homage to all those who have decided to leave everything to preserve the only thing that the communists of Tito they could not take from them: identity”, said the Prime Minister during the ceremony at the National Monument of Basovizza.
Meloni underlined the importance of transmitting to future generations the memory of this sad stage in Italy’s history, which occurred in 1947, two years after the end of the Second World War.
“The blind and inhuman violence of the Foibe has long been minimised, if not completely ignored or denied. But the asymmetry of memory, as Mattarella warned, is yet another insult to the victims and is not tolerable”, he added.
Despite the numerous ceremonies commemorating the massacres committed by the former Yugoslavia, a plaque commemorating the victims of the Foibe in Florence has been vandalised.
The tragedy occurred due to the desire of the former Yugoslavia to annex the Italian region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, in the extreme north-east of the nation, and all those who tried to oppose it were murdered by Marshal Josip Broz’s army Tito, the then prime minister of the Slavic country.
The opponents were thrown into holes formed naturally by the action of water in the ground, which were called “foibe” by the inhabitants of the region, hence the name of the massacre. .
