The Iron Man actor, who is in the film’s cast, made a “joke with a real meaning” when sharing the director’s situation
Active since the 1990s, Christopher Nolan He is one of the most renowned filmmakers today. However, although he has directed a number of successful films in the past, none of them seem to have left his name as prominent as Oppenheimer.
The physicist’s biopic J. Robert Oppenheimer, the “father” of the atomic bomb, made him, at the same time, an enormous commercial and critical success. The film went on to gross just over US$950 million — very close to the US$1 billion of its biggest box office success, Batman: The Dark Knight (2008) — and also led the nominations in most of the biggest film awards, such as the 13 nominations for Oscars 2024.
All this leads us to believe that Nolan You were quite happy, weren’t you? According to the actor Robert Downey Jrone of the stars of Oppenheimerit wasn’t quite like that.
In presenting the filmmaker for the inaugural award Sundance Film Festival Trailblazerheld in Utah, in the United States, Downey Jr revealed that the film’s huge success was a “terrible tragedy” for Nolan. The reason? The director is very introverted and doesn’t feel comfortable with so many spotlights.
In a tone of “joke with a grain of truth”, Robertfamous especially for having been the interpreter of the Iron Manat the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCC)stated:
“Confidentially, he needs your encouragement. He is a little sad because a terrible tragedy has befallen him. It’s not my intention to touch on the subject and I know it’s very personal, but… he became recognizable on the streets. He recoils like a hot flame from this new and more undesirable reality.”
The tribute paid to Christopher in Sundance occurred due to his contributions to independent cinema. Upon receiving his award, the director reflected on how the festival boosted his career after the screening of Memento in 2000.
“It’s about two weeks where independent cinema doesn’t just mean a business model. It begins to have the meaning of an aspiration for filmmakers. This means that as directors, writers and actors, you are treated as artists. You are proud to be the author of what you did.”
