Idea taken: Darth Vader doesn’t say “Luke, I am your father” in Star Wars

The scene takes place in 1980 at the end of the second feature film in the Star Wars saga, directed by Irwin Kershner.

Hoping to find refuge with Lando Calrissian on the planet Bespin, Leia, Han Solo, Chewbacca and C-3PO are ambushed by Imperial troops. Flying to their aid, Luke suddenly finds himself alone, facing the formidable Darth Vader, in the bowels of Cloud City. Although he had already met her on the X-Wing at the end of the previous episode, the budding Jedi draws his lightsaber for the first time in front of his sworn enemy.

  • Everyone is wrong about this Titanic line!

The duel is relentless and the two opponents do not hold back their attacks. But at the end of the confrontation, after severing his hand, Vader inflicted the most terrible blow on Luke, not with a blow, but with a simple answer that still resonates in the memories of all viewers 40 years later.

“Hey, I’m your father.”

really ? Are you sure you heard those words when you discovered The Empire Strikes Back in the theater? Well, it’s not! Contrary to what we might hear in most parodies or spoofs, or whenever a fan quotes a famous little catchphrase, Vader absolutely does not say his son’s name when he tells him that he is his father.

So the real answer is:

“No, I’m your father.”

No doubt this is due to the surprise and emotional power of the famous scene, but it seems that the memory of all viewers fails them when it comes to accurately restoring these few but mythical words.

Like Leonardo DiCaprio’s famous line at the beginning of Titanic, this has to be classed as one of those great movie lines that no one gets right.
