King Charles attends church in public for the first time since announcing his cancer diagnosis

Britain’s King Charles went to church Sunday in his first public appearance since announcing last week that he had been diagnosed with cancer and would postpone some appointments to undergo treatment.

The king, wearing a brown overcoat and carrying an umbrella, waved as he arrived with his wife Camilla at the church of St Mary Magdalene in Sandringham, eastern England.

Buckingham Palace announced Monday that Charles, 75, has been diagnosed with an unspecified form of cancer. The king has been on the throne for less than 18 months following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth.

Charles, who is spending time at his country estate in Sandringham, released a message on Saturday expressing gratitude to his subjects and supporters following news of the diagnosis.

During treatment, Charles has postponed public engagements, but intends to continue with much of his private work as monarch, including his weekly audience with the prime minister and the validation and signing of state documents.

The cancer was discovered after Charles spent three nights in hospital last month undergoing a corrective procedure for a benign enlargement of the prostate. Other than confirming that it was not prostate cancer, the palace provided no further details about the disease.
