During the 2024 Super Bowl, Universal released the first trailer for “Wicked,” the adaptation of the Broadway musical based on the book by Gregory Maguire. Within the Oz universe, the work features Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch of the West, and Ariana Grande as Glinda, the future Good Witch of the North.
There’s everything from the intense friendship of school days to the angst of adult life and political conflicts (as well as a love triangle) in the production. The trailer highlighted an excerpt of Erivo’s performance in “Defying Gravity” at the end and confirmed that the production, which wrapped in January after delays due to strikes in Hollywood, used real locations rather than CGI to create the Emerald City.
The stellar cast includes Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible and Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, among others. Watch the trailer:
Two-part villain
Jon M. Chu directs the film. The American director, producer and screenwriter emphasizes a narrative faithful to the original material – and therefore it will be a large and complex work, with the release of the first part scheduled for November 27, 2024 and the second part on November 26, 2024. 2025.
