The Tricolore will face the first major test of the season and intends to maintain Carioca’s leadership; Cruz-Maltino seeks to consolidate in the G4
Fluminense and Vasco will face each other this Wednesday (14th), at 9.30pm, at the Maracanã, in the eighth round of the Campeonato Carioca. This will be the Tricolore’s first major test of the season, as Cruz-Maltino heads towards its second classic in 2024.
The Laranjeiras team is leader of the state, with 17 points, two more than Flamengo, second. Gigante da Colina appears fourth, with 12. In the last match between rivals, Vasco beat Fluminense 4-2, at the Nilton Santos, in the Brasileirão. After all, São Januário was banned as punishment for an act of vandalism by fans.
Where to look
The match will be broadcast on Band on open TV, on the Bandsport channel on closed TV and on the Goat channel on YouTube.
How Fluminense arrives
After seven rounds, Fluminense remains unbeaten in Carioca with five wins and two draws. A new triumph for Fernando Diniz’s men ensures another round of leadership in the state.
The coach has to use full strength for the third time in 2024. After all, he has to give the minutes and pace of the game to his main players. Especially because, in the middle of next week, Fluminense will make a decision: first match of the Recopa Sul-Americana final against LDU, in Ecuador. Before the away match, the Laranjeiras team will face Madureira again next Saturday (17th). According to the program, the delegation will travel to Quito two days after the duel with Tricolor Suburbano.
How Vasco arrives
Cruz-Maltino returned to the winning ways in the last match with Carioca, when they beat Audax 1-0: on that occasion, in fact, the team finished 26 times and scored only six goals on target. With this situation, the need to strengthen the offensive sector has become clear. Post-match Rossi underlined the importance of the triumph after three rounds without winning in the State Championship.
The clash with Fluminense is considered fundamental to consolidate the team in the G4. In the event of a positive result, therefore, they could even reach third place if Nova Iguaçu stumbles.
Therefore, coach Ramón Díaz will probably bring his main players onto the field, with the return of Payet and Vegetti. While the midfielder received his third yellow card and served a suspension against Audax, the Argentine center forward showed that he has recovered quickly from a rib fracture and no longer feels uncomfortable. The tendency, therefore, is for him to return earlier than expected and use protections in the region where he suffered the injury.
Jair and Paulinho will remain absent due to serious injuries to their left and right knees respectively. This way both will miss most of the season.
