Botafogo’s rival in the second phase of the Libertadores will be known on Wednesday evening. Aurora plays for a draw, but Melgar is favored
Melgar or Aurora. One of these will be Botafogo’s rival in the second qualifying phase of the Libertadores-2024. The definition will take place this Ash Wednesday (14/2), when the Peruvians of Melgar will host the Bolivians of Aurora at the Monumental in Arequipa. After winning the home match 1-0, the Bolivian team plays for a draw. If Melgar wins with one goal difference, penalty shootout. By two or more goals they directly qualify to face Glorioso.
The winner of Melgar x Arequipa will face Botafogo at home, in the first leg, on 21/2. The return match, at Nilton Santos, will be on the 28th. And whoever passes through will face Bragantino or Águilas Doradas, from Colombia.
Where to look
This duel will be broadcast on ESPN and Star+ starting at 9.30pm (Brasilia time).
How is Melgar?
Coach Pablo de Muner regretted the team’s poor performance in the away match in Cochabamba. But he said the key became the team, which beat Atletico Alianza at the weekend, for the Peruano. And they are ready to confirm their favoritism, advance and face Botafogo in the next phase.
“We’re looking for victory and we’re excited. I have an experienced team that has the qualities to demonstrate strength and solidity, something we’ve been looking for a lot in recent training sessions,” the coach said in Tuesday’s press conference, but without revealing the lineup. However, he has already announced that he will make some changes.
How is Aurora?
Just like Melgar’s coach, Maurício Soria has not informed the team that he will take the field. It is not known. But there shouldn’t be any major changes. What is certain is that Kenji Cabrera, sent off in the first leg, is missing. But the fan is a reserve of the Peruvian squad.
“We won the first leg, but we are aware that we didn’t play a great match and that we have a lot to improve. But we managed, in the last work, to fix some points and I think we will have a great match in Peru. In this way we will look for the ranking,” said coach Maurício Soria.
