Lula arrives in Egypt to discuss the war between Israel and Hamas and sign an agreement on bioenergy

This is the Brazilian president’s second trip to the countries of the African continent; he will also go to Ethiopia

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva landed in Cairo, the capital of Egypt, around 4am this Wednesday (14th).

Lula will discuss with the Egyptian president Abdel Fatah Al-Sisi the war between Israel and the terrorist group Hamas, which began on October 7.

According to Itamaraty, the Brazilian and Egyptian governments will sign an agreement in the bioenergy sector.

Lula took off for Egypt this Tuesday around 2.20pm. The official agenda of the capital includes public commitments only next Thursday (15th).

This is the Brazilian president’s second trip to African countries since he assumed the office of President of the Republic.

Last year Lula visited South Africa, Angola and São Tomé and Príncipe. In this new round of travel, the president will visit Egypt and Ethiopia.

In the 2022 electoral campaign, Lula included among the guidelines of the government program the provision that, if elected, “rebuild” relations between Brazil and African countries.

Lula’s predecessor, former president Jair Bolsonaro, did not visit African countries during his years in office (2019-2022).

According to Itamaraty, the president’s agenda in Cairo next Thursday includes two meetings with Al-Sisi.

One of them will be just between the two of them and their respective interpreters. The second, in which members of both governments usually participate, will instead be expanded.

They must be part of the Brazilian delegation, in addition to Lula, the first lady JanjTHE; Chancellor Mauro Vieira; the special advisor to the president, Celsus Amorim; and the Minister of Science and Technology, Luciana Santos.
