Vasco executive director Alexandre Mattos complains about a penalty and calls for the expulsion of referee Bruno Mota Correia
Vasco da Gama’s complaints about the performance of referee Bruno Mota Correia were not limited to the field of play this Wednesday (14th). After the goalless draw with Fluminense, the Cruzmaltinos were very critical of the referee, especially for not awarding a penalty and disallowing a goal from David. But the ignored penalty especially angered executive director of football Alexandre Mattos.
The action came from a free kick by Paulo Henrique, in which the Italian Germán Cano, in the barrier, raises his arm. VAR called Bruno Mota Correia, but even with the support of video and replay from multiple angles, the referee did not award the penalty. After the match, Mattos went to the VAR stand and returned visibly irritated to speak to journalists:
“The whole committee understood that it was a penalty, that’s why they whistled it. Only he (the referee) thinks that the arm was glued to the body. Unfortunately I see the difficulty that Vasco has in the Carioca championship: a little “C ‘It was an ill will towards a bit of incompetence. What we ask is: remove one more referee from the championship. It was a gross mistake, which directly affected the result. Once again the Vasco was damaged.”
Previously, Vasco had already requested (and obtained) the expulsion of the referee Tarcizo Pinheiro Caetano. In the 2-2 draw against Bangu, Cruzmaltino submitted a formal request for punishment to the FERJ for the judge, who sent off midfielder Jair four minutes into the game at that time.
For Emiliano the team felt robbed
Equally angry was Vasco’s technical assistant, Emiliano Díaz. After Alexandre Mattos’ speech, he stated that the players felt robbed by what they considered obvious refereeing errors. He also said he told his opponent, Felipe Melo, that Bruno Mota Correia ruined the match:
“Vasco played a good match and didn’t deserve what happened. As I said to Felipe Melo, the referee ruined the show. The team understood that they had been robbed, it was absurd. We had two goals disallowed , penalties not scored and Gary (Medel) was still sent off without him having done anything. They tried everything against us last year, but this year they won’t be able to do it again”
