Oscar-nominated actress calls Kansas City Chiefs fans’ gesture racist

Lily Gladstoneindicated to the Oscar for the paper in Flower Moon Assassins, has used the spotlight to pave the way for indigenous people in cinema. During a panel at the Virtuosos Awards, from Santa Barbara International Film Festivalthe actress of Siksikaitsitapi and Niimiipuu origin criticized a practice by the Kansas City Chiefs (via Variety).

Fans of the team that won the Super Bowl support the players with a gesture considered racist. They imitate the Tomahawk axe, used by indigenous people of North America, by moving one of the arms back and forth:

Honestly, you could hold both teams responsible. The 49ers are based on the California Gold Rush, which was an incredibly brutal time for California’s indigenous people. And then the Chiefs. There are many ways to interpret the name ‘chief’. It’s not just the name that bothers me. It’s hearing that damn ‘Tomahawk chop’. Every time I hear it, it’s a blunt reminder of what Hollywood did to us, because the ‘Tomahawk chop’ is directly linked to the sounds of the old Western movies where we weren’t playing ourselves, or if we were, we were mere extras. It’s this ‘appropriation’ of that sound and saying it’s in ‘honour’ and the commodification of who we are as a people. It’s great to love the game and its players, but it still hurts.
