86 million viewers and an Oscar soon? This Netflix movie is breaking all records!

A real phenomenon in Spain, the snow circle won the whole world. Released on Netflix on January 4, it became a film by Juan Antonio Baona Second most popular non-English work Throughout the history of the platform.

In total, 86.1 million subscribers will discover this reconstruction of the drama in the Andes that took place in 1972. Only Troll, the Norwegian blockbuster released in 2021, did better with 103 million views.

A long abandoned project

The success of “Snow Circle” is a great revenge for Juan Antonio Bayon, to whom we owe “The Orphanage”, “The Impossible” and “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom”. The director struggled for ten years for the project to see the light of day.

Too risky for its high-risk shooting, the film was rejected by all Spanish and international studios. Only Netflix accepted the challenge. “They trusted us and allowed us to achieve our ambitions“- the director told AlloCiné in an interview.

Spain represented at the Oscars

On the evening of Sunday, February 11, the feature film became the third Spanish film with the most awards at the Goyas – Spain’s equivalent of the Cesars or Oscars – with 12 awards. Again a new record.

On March 11, the team will travel to Los Angeles for the 96th Academy Awards. Le Cercle des neiges has been nominated twice – including in the Best International Film category.

In addition to the snow circle, the Netflix platform also offers a documentary called Who Were We in the Mountains?, which recalls the authentic testimonies of survivors and impressive filming.
