Spotify Launches Hub Featuring Hip-Hop and RNB Classics; I wait!

Spotify launched its first catalog hub, Spotify Classics, in North America this week. The space, curated by the streaming editorial team, defines which most recent albums are considered classics of the Hip-Hop and RNB genres on the platform.

A collection of 30 albums It spans from 2015 to 2024 and questions the notion of what makes a classic and how artists have changed the public’s perception of what an album can and should be. Among the albums listed are:

Spotify Classics

“As editors, most of our jobs require us to review music, so for the first iteration of the Spotify Classics program, we thought it was important to celebrate albums as a body of work,” He says Carl Chery, creative director and head of urban music at Spotify. “Historically, media outlets would publish a list like Classic Hip-Hop and RNB Albums of the Streaming Era, but as a leader in streaming, we thought we were uniquely positioned to tell this story.

“I don’t think a streaming classic is any different than classic albums from previous eras,” he continues. “This program is 100% editorial. We consider factors like quality, impact, influence, replayability, and more when making our selections. We hope to start a conversation among music fans. Whether you’re excited to see your favorite album recognized or you’re outraged that your favorite album is missing, we welcome all opinions.

Transfers to the music sector

Spotify paid the music industry about $9 billion (about R$45 billion) in 2023, according to a company statement. According to the company, “the value has nearly tripled over the past six years and represents a large portion of the more than $48 billion that Spotify has paid out since its founding.”

The company explained, in March 2023, which returns nearly 70% of every dollar generated by music back to the industry. Therefore, its revenue comes from two sources: Spotify Premium subscriptions and advertising on the free plan.

It’s important to note that payments go to the rights holders first, who are rarely the artist or songwriter. They take their fee or percentage and then pay the artists their share. Owners include, for example, record labels, independent distributors and performing rights organizations.
