Bringing together the biggest guns and essentials of Hollywood action cinema: this was Sylvester Stallone’s bet with the Expendables in 2010. In front of and behind the camera, “Slime” then managed Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke. Terry Crews, Randy Couture, Steve Austin and bad boy Eric Roberts for this first opus, culminating in a meeting at the top during the sequence fans have always dreamed of between Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Sly, Schwarz, Willis, Van Damme, Norris, Ford, Gibson, Snipes, Banderas…
Even if this first mission is (very) far from perfect (2.8 out of 5 according to the press, 2.9 out of 5 according to the audience), the records are 1,651,849 tickets sold in France and $274 million worldwide. It’s enough to immediately start a franchise around our favorite “sacrificing” mercenaries. Expendables 2 (2012) adds Chuck Norris and Jean-Claude Van Damme to the equation, and Expendables 3 (2014) is even stronger with appearances from Harrison Ford, Mel Gibson, Antonio Banderas and Wesley Snipes!
But the recipe runs out, and it’s in 2023 that the franchise finds its (probable) conclusion with Expend4bles. Death on the field of honor? Alas, not for Barney Ross and his men, which was credited with 327,756 releases in France and $37.9 million at the worldwide box office. With the added bonus of disastrous reviews and seven Razzie Award nominations for worst Oscar ever.
It’s heavy, very heavy!
