Chris Sanders Opened Up About The Criticism Both Films Received – And Not Everyone Noticed
Viewers loved it Frozen (2013) for prioritizing fellowship, but such praise left the co-director of Lilo & Stitch (2002), Chris Sanders, a little irritated. In a conversation with the The New York Timesthe filmmaker vented about the frustration he has with the comments about Frozen.
the launch of Frozen was widely celebrated for rejecting the romantic patterns of the animated fairy tale of disney. There was no prince saving the day or “true love’s first kiss” between a man and a woman, but rather, the relationship between sisters Anna and Elsa.
To be clear, I think Frozen excellent. But it was a little frustrating for me because people were like, ‘Finally, a non-romantic relationship with these two girls,’ and I thought, ‘We did it! This has absolutely been done before.’
Lilo & Stitch debuted 20 years ago in June 2002, 11 years before Frozen. While the film is not a fairy tale, it has subverted Disney’s long-standing trend of animated novels.
Directed by Sanders and Dean DeBlois, Lilo & Stitch focuses on the friendship between a young Hawaiian girl and an extraterrestrial blue koala-like creature. In addition to friendship, the film addresses the challenges of the older sister, nanitake care of lilowho raises her after the death of her parents in a car accident.
There is no romantic love in Lilo & Stitch, just the bond that develops between two new friends and the love that exists between sisters. The film grossed $271 million worldwide and launched a franchise that included three sequels and three television series.
For Sandersthe focus on sisterhood precedes Frozen in more than a decade. The co-director finally declares that he wants the film to be recognized for centering a non-novel at its center. Lilo & Stitch is now available on Disney+.
